The price of freedom can often be tragically expensive, but Texans from all walks of life did their best to help one central Texas family deal with its grief as it laid a hero to rest in Waelder Tuesday.
Funeral services were held in Smithville Tuesday for Sgt. Mario Rodriguez Jr., 24, of Smithville. Burial was at Waelder Community Cemetery.

The Texas Department of Rural Affairs (TDRA) presented the City of Waelder with two oversized, ceremonial checks to recognize the community for its hard work in securing a grant from the agency’s Texas Community Development Block Grant program.
