Termeka Canada, of Nixon-Smiley High School, signed a letter of intent April 9 to play basketball at Temple Junior College next year.

Nixon-Smiley senior post Termeka Canada has been named to two All-State teams after leading the Lady Mustangs to the regional finals this year, while two Lady Mustangs head up the All-Region team.

The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs continued to struggle in District 28-2A baseball action, falling Tuesday to Kenedy by a 12-1 score after dropping a 9-2 decision to Karnes City on Friday.

If you’ve ever wondered where the term “throwing someone a curve ball” came from, all you have to do is ask the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs. After their experience with Stockdale pitcher Cody Myrick Tuesday, that is one phrase they will never miss on a vocabulary test.

After getting out-scored 23-2 in their first two outings of their own tournament, the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs needed something good to happen in Saturday's third round of pool play. That something good was pitcher Garrett Ruiz and a sudden awakening of the Mustangs' bats: Ruiz tossed four innings of no-hit ball and the Mustangs rapped out nine hits en route to a 9-2 victory over San Antonio Homeschool.

Nixon-Smiley rallied from a first-quarter deficit with a powerful defensive effort and came from behind to knock off Salado by a 42-39 score Friday in Class 2A girls' basketball area-round playoff action.

The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs used a choking defense to build a 28-point halftime lead and cruised home Monday with a 61-31 victory over Johnson City in Class 2A girls' basketball bi-district playoff action.

The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs might have a state ranking, but they won’t be entering the playoffs as a district champion. The Poth Lady Pirates took an early lead and held on Tuesday to stun the state-ranked Lady Mustangs by a 47-33 score and claim the District 28-2A girls’ basketball title.
