Gov. Rick Perry on Thursday issued a state disaster declaration for 40 Texas counties — including Gonzales, Lavaca, Caldwell and DeWitt counties — which will help speed recovery assistance to communities and families affected by Tropical Storm Hermine by opening the door to state and federal assistance.

SCHULENBURG--Technically, it was a basketball game -- but it could well have been two ancient gladiators stabbing and parrying, two prize fighters duking it out or two chess masters matching wits. In the end, the Burton Panthers scrapped their way to a 48-45 victory over the Waelder Wildcats Monday in a Class 1A boys’ basketball regional quarterfinal playoff at the Schulenburg High School Gym.

The Waelder Wildcats drew a first-round bye in the Class 1A Division 2 boys' basketball playoffs and entered Tuesday awaiting the outcome of a game between Chirenzo and Fayetteville.

The musical tastes of most of the players on the Waelder Wildcats’ roster follow the trend among most of today’s young folk, but they’d likely be right at home with some old Beatles fare as well. After all, they get by with a little help from their friends.

The smallest team in the tournament proved they could hang with the bigger schools as the Waelder Wildcats came back from an opening-round setback to pick up two wins and claim the title Saturday in the Gonzales Runnin’ Apache Tournament.
